Hiking Club Introductory Information
Hiking with the Trilogy at Vistancia Hiking Club is a great way to explore the beauty of Arizona, as well as providing an opportunity for fellowship with friends and neighbors. It is important, however, to remember that all hikers are responsible for participating in hikes that match their abilities, and are prepared with the appropriate clothing and gear for each hike.
The following is some information that will be helpful to you.
1. KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Hike location and difficulty level will be provided prior to each hike to help club members determine if a hike fits into their available time and hiking stamina. It is up to each hiker to participate in hikes that are within his/her abilities.
Each hiking activity will be rated through grade A-C, the following is the explanation of the ratings:
Level A - Easy hike. Some hills.
Level B - Moderate for most people. Some steep hills.
Level C - Strenuous, steep hills
2. BE PREPARED
Each hiker is responsible for carrying an adequate amount of water, food, and basic first aid kit. Hike length and time can vary substantially from estimates, due to weather, rest breaks, etc. Temperature, terrain, and time are all factors in determining your water and food requirements. It is a good idea to carry more water than you think you will need.
Select clothing and footwear that are suited to the terrain and weather; such as substantial hiking shoes or boots and layers of lighter weight clothing. There are many websites that list appropriate clothing and gear for hiking.
It is advisable to carry emergency contact information, in the event of injury or illness.
3. CARPOOLS
Whenever feasible, we will carpool from the Kiva Club to the trail head.
Drivers: Volunteer drivers should bear in mind that roads to the trail heads are not always paved, and sometimes rough. When possible, the hike leader will give drivers an idea of what types of roads to anticipate. There are times when some hikers will end the hike before everyone else has returned. Before leaving the trail head at the end of the hike, drivers should CONFIRM that all their passengers are accounted for.
Passengers: Driving expenses should be shared among the passengers, and will vary based on the distance to the trailhead. Commute distance and expense information will be provided prior to each hike. Passengers should be prepared to compensate the driver for driving expense. Some trail heads require an entry fee, which should be split among the occupants of each car.
At the end of the hike, if a passenger elects to ride home in a different car, he/she should tell the original driver – or leave a clear note under the windshield wiper of that car.
Do not leave the hike without notifying other hikers.
4. CHECKING IN ON HIKE DAY
Registered club members must sign in at the Kiva Club desk, listing their name and cell phone number. Double check that you have your cell phone with you, it is charged, and turned on. The hike leaders' cell phone number will be listed on the sign-in sheet. Hikers should have the leaders' phone numbers recorded in their own phones. Cell phones don't always work in canyons, but having the phones and numbers available is often helpful.
5. GUEST POLICY
Everyone who participates in a Trilogy Hiking Club hike must have a signed waiver on file. There may be instances when hiking club members have guests who want to participate in a hike. Guests may participate in a limited number of hikes; however, a waiver must be on file prior to departing on the first hike.
We hope this information is helpful to you, but realize that you may have other questions. The members of the Board of the Trilogy Hiking Club are available to provide answers - or to direct you to the appropriate resources. We're all looking forward to a safe and enjoyable hiking season!
