Hiking Groups
There are four hiking groups designed to accomodate all hiking interests and levels.
New members are strongly encouraged to complete a short hike before joining an intermediate hike, and to successfully complete an intermediate hike before joining the long group. Those with significant recent hiking experience can review their credentials with THC leadership.
Long Group - Long hikes can range up to 15 miles and 3400ft of ascent and often travel well into backcountry out of cell service range. Hikes are generally within a 30-90 minute drive of Trilogy though the groups will venture to Sedona and points north for some Spring hikes.
Intermediate Group - The intermediate hikers generally follow the long hikers, but at a significantly slower pace. When the scheduled long hike is significantly longer or with greater elevation gain, the intermediate group will modify or schedule a different hike. Hikes typically are between 8 and 10 miles with a cumulative ascent of 1,500 to 2,000 feet.
Short Group - Short hikes will range from 4 to 7 miles and typically last anywhere from 2-3 hours. Breaks are encouraged on the trail to allow hikers to catch their breath and enjoy the scenery. The majority of hikes occur within Maricopa County and are generally within a one hour drive from Trilogy. An occasional hike may be scheduled near Prescott or Sedona to add variety. Optional post-hike lunches are always scheduled for those wanting to add a socializing element to the day.
Casual Group - Short hikers may form into a casual group. Most casual hikes are "in and out" hikes. Casual hikers use the same trail as short hikers, but hike at a significantly slower pace, about 1 1/3 miles per hour. Turning around at half the total allotted hiking time, casual hikers arrive back at the trail head at about the same time as the short hikers.
